Stuff About Golf

Archive for February, 2009

Through much debating I have decide I want to move to North Carolina. I have chosen North Carolina for the consistently warm climate which will offer me year round fishing, golfing, and outdoor recreation. In addition to climate the density of medium to large cities offer vast job opportunities.

Where are some areas to live that will put me close to North Carolinas best fishing waters while at the same time being off the coast far enough to be safe from hurricane and such.

I like the idea of locating myself between Charlotte, Greensboro, and Raleigh.

Any suggestions that will help me chose a specific place to live. Any websites or specific info about studio/1bedroom apartments that are classy” yet rent for under $600/month. Preferably under $500/month.

Two questions:

Where are the best areas where I’ll be surrounded by numerous high quality fishing waters within 50 mile radius (roughly)?

What places offer contemporary/modernly styled studio/1bedroom apartment with a rent of under $500/month? (preferably closer to $350/mo mark)

I live in Charlotte, NC and you've got some excellent lakes around here. Lake Norman, Wylie, High Rock, and many other. Very close too.

Custom Golf Club

Posted by admin on Feb-27-2009

Every golfer’s physical capability and swing is distinctive. Many of today’s best golf clubs can be custom fit for lie angle, shaft type and length, grip type and size. Custom fitting golf clubs involves several easy measurements and a quick self-assessment of your game. This custom golf club has become more than a fad that even not so professional golfers test its waters.

Custom fitting is the process for tailoring a golf club to suit your personal swing.

Whatever your level, with a custom golf club the aim is to ensure that if you do make a good swing, the club will be square at impact and should produce a straight shot.

Custom Golf Club How To’s:

To custom fit your golf clubs, you need to know: your gender (male or female); your height in your stockings or socks; the distance from your wrist (where it bends) to the floor with your shoes off; your age; your handicap or skill level; how fast you swing a golf club; what club you use at the 150 yard marker.

Gender is used to put you into the correct fitting scale for custom golf clubs. The golf industry uses different definitions of “standard length” for men and women.

Your height and the distance in inches from your wrist to the floor are used together to determine the length of a custom golf club that is appropriate for you. The starting point for club length can vary up to 3 ½-inch ranging from ladies to men plus 1 ½-inch. A tall person with long arms can very easily require shorter clubs than an average height person with short arms. About 80 percent of golfers are standard length.

Your age, handicap (if you happen to have one), self-assessed skill level, estimated golf swing speed and club you use at the 150 yard marker are all combined to determined the custom golf club’s shaft flex that is appropriate for you.

Custom fitting can fix your slice. If you slice the ball it means that the toe of the club is leading into the ball which opens the face of the club. That may be down to a swing fault, but it could be because the club is too flat. So as part of the custom fitting process you can make the custom golf club more upright to help with this. This will mean that the toe of the club will be slightly off the ground at address to compensate.

There are different methods of fitting according to custom golf club manufacturers but ultimately they are all trying to improve your game. To begin with simple measurements such as wrist-to-floor, height and hand size are taken and will point you to the right size club and at what angle it should be to the ground. Then you will take a club and hit some balls. One method is to place impact tape on the bottom of the custom golf club and an impact board on the floor.

As you hit the ball the board will leave a mark on the tape showing whether the heel or the toe of the custom golf club is striking the floor first. The resulting mark will show whether the club face needs to be flatter or more upright. Then things get a bit more advanced. Analysis equipment can measure everything from your club speed to the side spin of the ball so that you can get maximum distance from your shot. You can also measure the launch angle of the ball, how much backspin you generate and impact efficiency – all which affect distance. The angle in which the custom golf club approaches the ball and the sidespin of it can help fix your game too.

Rather than bringing down your old clubs, it might be better to start from scratch. It’s a big misconception that custom fitting is only for good golfers. Anyone can benefit. That said, if you plan to upgrade a new set of clubs with the same manufacturer they may be able to adjust your old set to become custom golf clubs.

Custom fitting won’t cure all your bad shots. Coaching will sort that out. But if you do make a good swing, then the custom golf club will arrive correctly at impact and should produce a straight shot at your target. That alone will save shots during a round.

Lastly, custom fitting is often free of charge. But it is usually on the condition that you buy some clubs once you’ve been fitted. So it really depends on what your budget is. If you’re prepared to buy a new set of clubs it’s definitely worth getting fitted.

i need advice with my game?

Posted by admin on Feb-26-2009

how the hell do i get rid of the nerves when im teeing off on the golf coarse it usually only happens when people are watching im only starting to play golf im at it a few months

Rest assured that this is not a problem that only beginners have.
Even golf professionals will feel nervous when hitting important shots, it's how they handle those nerves that makes the difference.

By and large all good golfers will have what they call a "pre-shot routine".
A pre-shot routine is simple, repeatable system of mental and physical preparation that each golfer will go through prior to hitting a shot. The simpler the better as it will hold up best under pressure and will not result in slow play.

Key elements are:
- the trigger/cue. This can be a simple gesture like shrugging your shoulders or putting your hand on top of the club you're about to hit. This signifies the beginning of your preshot routine and once you've done this, you're kinda stepping into a bubble where nothing exists but you, the ball and the club

- mental preparation/visualisation & practice swings
all good golfers will visualise the shot. They will see it in their minds eye, flying to the target, they will visualise and feel the swing necessary to produce this shot. The number of practice swings you take is not important, what is important is feeling that the last one you make is the right one.

- pick target and set-up to ball
you need to pick a specific target. The brain responds better to small targets, so don't just aim "at the fairway", pick a specific tree on the skyline or even better a branch on that tree and set-up square to the target

- take one last look at the target and then repeat the practice swing you made. Try not delay too long between your last look at the target and beginning your swing. The longer you stand over the ball, the less likely you are to make a smooth takeaway. Think only of your target and try to avoid thinking about any mechanical aspects of the swing ie. make sure I keep my left arm straight, keep your head down etc.

Hope this is helpful. If you are interested in the mental side of sports performance, particularly regarding golf, check out Golf is not a game of perfect by Bob Rotella. It's an old book, but it's timeless.

As with all sports, no books or advice/tips can replace quality teaching from a reputable PGA professional

What makes a golf widow?

Posted by admin on Feb-18-2009

People often refer to me as a golf widow and I suppose that I am.

Over the years my husband has had his share of days out there playing golf and I suppose that makes me what is known as a golf widow.

His great love of golf was all my fault too!!

Years ago it was me that brought home a rather shabby looking set of golf clubs that a friends husband was getting rid of. Up until then he had shown no interest in the game of golf whatsoever, but I would often see him down at the bottom of the garden swinging these decrepit old golf clubs and probably dreaming that he was Tiger Woods.

Anyway one day my brother who is a keen golfer asked him for a friendly game of golf at our local municipal course.

There we have it. There was no going back, he was hooked.

From then on every Christmas and birthday he always asked for a golf related present that he wanted. The golf clubs were gradually upgraded and then came the electric golf trolley. This had to be a decent one which also applies to the rest of the gear that has been accumulated over the years. Golf equipment I’ve found is a very personal thing. Whichever brand is a favourite for one person is not necessarily the same for a fellow golfer. But having found their favourite maker the golfer tends to stick with the same one. That seems to be my experience in any case.

Finally, yes I am a golf widow and I like it!

It meant that I was in a position to do as I liked and not always had to be in each others pockets all the time.

Independent hobbies are definately a healthy way to go and I would encourage couples to do their own thing. I have seen too many friends who drive each other up the wall because they have no space for themselves.

Also first and foremost this golf hobby has always been a great way of keeping healthy and enjoying the company and companionship of like minded people and this can only mean that my second hand gift was a brilliant idea!
